Abstract: Agricultural development is dependent on a number of complex, integrated factors. One of these factors is the quality of advice and assistance received from donor agency personnel. The US land grant colleges of agriculture have played an important role in US donor agency programs and have supplied faculty to the donor agencies to assist in agricultural development since Truman's Point IV program in 1949. However, several recent studies have raised warning flags concerning future college of agriculture involvement in technical assistance activities. The warnings indicate a decreasing involvement by college of agriculture faculty in these activities at a time when the need for faculty assistance exists and is expected to grow. It was the purpose of this study to probe beneath the favorable attitudes which a selected number of college of agriculture faculty have toward technical assistance activities and attempt to assess their motivation for involvement. By concentrating this study on the motivational factors, information resulted which provides a better understanding of why faculty become involved and why they stay involved in technical assistance programs. |
