The banana slug, Urocyclus flavescens, is a yellow slug that grows up to 35 mm long. The slugslay translucent eggs in batches under old leaves or in the ground, from where hatching will occur after the first good summer rains. Young slugs are very resistant to drought and in the absence of moisture they can remain inert for many months. Although this pest has been well known for many years along the south coast of Natal, it was only in 1967 that it frist caused serious damage in the Eastern Transvaal. Slung damage can be recognised by the rasping marks on the banana peel which eventually take on a brown, corky appearance. |
