Six cultivars of spring wheat, Triticum aestivum L. were grown under well-watered and deficit irrigation conditions at Phoenix, AZ. Canopy temperature were measured daily at 1330 to 1400 hours (MST) using and-help infrared thermometers. Cultivars which had the warmest midday canpoy temperatures under well-watered conditions used the least amount of water during the season and had the highest relative yields when water was limited. Cultivars exhibiting the coolest canopy temperatures used a maximum amount of water and, when exposed to drought stress, yielded poorly compared with non-stressed checks. Results suggest that canopy temperatures may be a useful screening technique for yield performance of cultivars subjected to water stress during growth. |
