Whiteflies (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) have become a group of insects of great economic interest because of their potencialities as pest. Visits were made from 1989 to 1993 to collect insects from different areas where vegetables, root crops, grains and lesser fruits are produced, to update the species which occur on the main agricultural crops. Eight species of Aleyrodids were detected; Aleurodicus dispersus Russel on banana; Aleuroglandulus malangae Russel on taro; Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) on egg plant; Aleurotrachelus (Back) on bell pepper, tomato, taro, lack beans and sweet potato; Dialeurodes sp. on yam; Trialeurodes abutiloneus (Haldemam) on cassava, and beli pepper; Trialeurodes variabilis (Quaintance) on papaya, and Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) on 27 plants. B. tabaci was the predominant and most widely distributed species: information is given on the locations where the new hosts were detected. |
