In this experiment 94 heifers were inseminated with antibiotic-treated semen from Vibrio-infected bulls. Vibriosis did not developed in any of the heifers as evidenced by the failure to isolate the organism from estrual mucus or the uteri at the time of slaughter and/or to detect vaginal agglutinins. Antibiotic treatment consisted of the additions of 500 units of penicillin, 500 ug of streptomycin and 3 mg of sulfanilimide per ml of extended semen. The semen was extended at least 1:25 with yolk-citrate diluter. Except for six samples, the processed semen was held at least 6 hours before use. |
