Cassava is an important subsidiary food crop, accounting for 30-40% of secondary food production. It not only plays an important role in rural food security and has many end-uses (human, animal and industrial), but it also has the capacity to produce relatively good yields under poor climatic and edaphic conditions. In 1989 the Ministry of Agriculture created the Vietnamese Root and Tuber Research Program as the first step toward a strategic reorganization of root and tuber research in Vietnam. Then Vietnamese cassava researchers approached CIAT for assistance with a cassava sector needs assessment. Thus, from 1990 onward, a series of cassava production, processing and marketing analyses were conducted as principal elements of a strategic cassava research planning exercise. |
