Four mature, oesophageal fistulated, Ankole steers were used to sample range pasture at monthly intervals from August 1966 to July 1967 at 08.00, 11.00, 14.00 and 17.00 hours. Data presented demonstrate that there was no significant difference in the crude protein content of the samples attributable to the steers or to the time of day of sampling. Differences in crude protein content of the samples collected in different months were highly significant (P=0.01). The crude protein content of the samples followed a bimodal pattern through the year that was approximately in phase with the changes in liveweight of the cattle and with rainfall patterns. Crude protein as a percentage of dry matter rose from 5.5 per cent in August to 11.9 per cent in September, fell to 7.0 per cent in january, rose to 16-6 per cent in May and fell 7.2 per cent in July. The September protein coincided with the beginning of the second rains after a three month dry season, whereas the may peak occurred at the end of the first rains following a dry season of only four weeks duration. |
