The Pantanal is a vast tropical wetland composed largely of seasonally flooded grasslands. Aquatic vascular plants predominate during flooding in most areas, often attaining high biomass. We analyzed 68 samples of gas bubbles from the sediments and leaf litter in a variety of representative aquatic environments, including riverine floodplains covered with dense mats of floating plants as well as marshes with rooted emergent vegetation. The sediment gases tend to have high concentrations of methane (mean +- s. d., 53 +- 21%), with a wide range (5-84%). These high concentration suggest high rates of methane production and ebullition. The remaining gases in the bubbles include carbon dioxide (3,8+- 2,9%), oxygen (1,9+- 3.4%), and nitrogen (41 +- 20%). We discuss the relationship between sediment gas content and gases dissolved in the overlying water column, as well as spatial and temporal patterns in sediment gas composition. |
