Economic and managerial conditions prevailing combine to strongly suggest that traditional extensive beef cattle and sheep production practices common to southern Brazil and Latin America in general will continue in the near future. This dependency upon grazing at all stages in the productive process implies that every nutrient be supplied in the form of forage. Mineral elements in forage are often direct reflections of levels in the soils, and thus a deficiency places a year-round limitation on production by animal dependent exclusively on grass, since specific supplementation is often lacking. The lack of phosphorus in soil and forage limits meat and wool production only because it is accompanied by widespread lack of supplementation; there is no sound basis for discrimination against good quality bonemeal supplied in covered feeders, at current local prices. Trace mineral research conducted with native pasture in southern Brazil has been limited; initial observations indicate that iodine, copper, cobalt, and selenium are certainly borderline or deficient in forage plants. Equipment for analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometry techniques exists at Federal Universities in the area. Research monies and interests need to be motivated toward a recognition of the existing problem, and its eventual solution. |
