The cattle industry in Panama is not a profitable enterprise during the dry season; tack of adeqaute forages and high prices of concentrates are the main causes. Twenty four steers were alocated at random to four treatment in a randomized complete-block design. All animals received ad libitum amounts of poor quality hay and mineral supplement. Treatment groups included, in addition to the ad libitum hay, Group A: Ad libitum feeding of a mixture of sugar cane molasses and urea (9:1 by weight). Group B: as above, plus an intake-restricting device. Group C: Control. Group D: Ad libitum feeding of sugar cane molasses. The mean daily liveweight gains were 500, 419 and 126 grams for groups A, B and C respectively; steers in group D lost 117 grams per day. The differences between means were significant (P < 0.001). Steers on the urea supplemented diets (treatments A and B) consumed more dry matter than the steers on the other two diets. The difference in intake, was accounted for by an additional intake from the urea-molasses mixture. Urea supplementation at the level used in this experiment was not associated with any symptoms of urea toxocity. In treatment D, addition of molasses caused a 56 per cent decrease in hay intake relative to the control treatment. This is accord with othjer reports about the negative effects of carbonate-rich sources on the consumption of poor quality roughages. Under the present husbandry practice in panama, wherte roughages are supplemented with molasses, it is necessary to provide a source of N.
