Changes in the various protein fractions, separated by SDS PAGE, were studied along an annual cycle in old and young leaves and fruits from various stages of development. Samples were collected during winter dormancy, flowering, fruit set, and in summer and fall periods. Determination on changes in both free and protein amino acid rates, was also carried out. The study was done by using 'Washington' navel orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) and 'Navelate', a mutant of this cultivar, that has low productivity. Results obtained indicate that certain protein fractions in old leaves may constitute a source of nitrogen that mobilizes during the spring, when the highest demand of nutrients takes place. Free amino acid content varies with the nitrogen demand by the plant, and it clearly decraeses in old and young 'Navelate' leaves in the time course pof flowering and fruit set. This may be due to the high consumption caused by the abundant flowering of this cultivar. As a consequence of the low fruit set, typical of 'Navelate' the amino acid content during winter dormancy, appears to be higher in this cultivar than in 'Washington' navel. |
