Frequent detection of cattle persistently infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in breeding herds led to a more detailed study on a farm with a large-sized pedigree herd hept in separate units. Prevention of further persistent infections by association of non-pregnant serologically negative heifers with the persitently infected animals was prompted. A BVDV isolate from one of the persitently infected animals was used for extensive comparative serological testing. Identity of this isolate with the BVDV responsible for the infection of the serologically positive cattle of the whole herd was allowed to be assumed. The serological responses of the persistently infected animals after inoculation with one of the isolates and later application of a commercial vaccine were followed up. The results are discussed in view of intraherd control of BVD. |
