By using F1 and F2 populations, heterosis, character association and inheritance studies were conducted for grain weight, protein content and yield in the crosses involving average and high grain weight genotypes. In average x high crosses, the grain weight and protein content showed a strong positive association, while in average x average crosses, the correlation was negative and significant. Heterosis values, magnitude of the additive genetic effect, narrow sense heritability and genetic advance values indicate that in the segregating population of average x high grain weight crosses, selection for grain weight can lead to the simultaneous improvement in protein content and grain yield. |
