In their thorough and thoughtful introduction, the editors of this volume, two sociologists and a biologist, make the refreshing promise that there is no major
theme presented in these essays. Their goal is the opposite: to provide diverse, often opposing, perspectives on each of four controversies lighting up popular and professional discussion of science and technology today. Three of the four topics — antibiotics use on the farm, hormone replacement therapy and menopause, and smallpox and bioterrorism — are of immediate interest to historians and students of health and medicine. A fourth, the debate over genetically modified crops, illustrates that agricultural science is facing issues that also trouble medical research. |
