Nineteen populations representing the range of various germplasms adapted to most maize growing areas of Brazil and their crosses were used in this study. The average yields of the parents ranged from 2237 to 6289 kg/ha. where as the populations crosses ranged from 4708 to 7595 kg/ha. The average heterosis was h' = 770.05 kg/ha and the population heterosis effect ranged from -661.32 to 784.33 kg/ha The population showed differnt genetic and heterotic potentials for the four characters studied. There was interaction of entries X locations for ear weight only. F-test indicated that population heterosis was significant (P < 0,01) for the combined analysis over locations. For ear weight, of the total sum of squares due to heterosis, 28% was attributed to averageheterosis, 19% due to specific heterosis. In the combined analyses, ear weight and prolificacy showed significance for specific heterosis, but plant and ear heights characters presented no significance indicating no genetic divergence among the populations. Populations CMS 06 and CMS 08 showed the highest combining ability in crosses for ear weight, while populations CMS 06 and CMS 01 had a high specific combining ability in the highest yielding in cross (7595 kg/ha). |
