A systems-modelling approach was used to study pig production systems in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Two models were developed for that purpose. The first simulates the farm as a whole, including the production of corn and soyabeans as well as the pig husbandry activity. It includes a complete representation of the biological cycle for reproduction and production in the pig herd, with the animals generally accounted for on an individual basis and with stochastic treatment of the main biological events and processes. Crop production is treated in terms of the processes, involved, such as land preparation, planting, crop production and harvesting, with emphasis on the availabilities of land and labour. Given appropriate inputs for management decisions and prevailing prices, the model predicts biological performance plus recurrent costs and returns. The predictions of the model were validated against performance records from commercial farms. The second model simulates the performance of growing and finishing pigs from 20 kg liveweight to slaughter at approximately 100 kg. It is an integral sub-model of the whole-farm model, but may also be used independently to simulate specialist enterprises. It accounts for the metabolism of energy and protein and their conjoint effects on body development and growth. The predictions of this model were validated against the results of feeding trials. |
