Six gallery forests on well-drained soils were sampled in Chapada dos Veadeiros located between 13o - 15oS and 47o - 49o WGr. Two forests were sampled in the locality of Vila Propicio, Goianesia-GO (15o 16' - 15o 26'S and 48o40' - 49o04'WGr), three forests in Alto Paraiso de Goias-GO (14o - 14o10'S and 47o20' - 47o58'WGr) and one in the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park (13o50' - 14o12'S and 47o24' - 47o58'WGr). Each forest was sampled systematically and 10x20m (200m2) plots were placed continuously along three transects going from the edge with the surrounding campo limpo till the riverbank. The distances between transects varied with the width of the forests. The minimum sampling intensity was 0,3 ha per forest. All arboreal trees (dbh >- 5cm) were identified and measured. TWINSPAN (Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis) was used to classify the vegetation and the parameter density was used for the comparison. The first division of TWINSPAN classification separated forests in two groups (eigenvalue=0,428). Two forests in Alto Paraiso and one of the forests of Vila Propicio belonged to the first group while others forests of Alto Paraiso de Goias and Vila Propicio and the forest sampled in Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park were in the other group. The preferential species of the group that included one forest in Vila Propicio (Fidalgo2 gallery forest) and two forests in Alto Paraiso (Sao Miguel and Picarrao gallery forests) were Machaerium acutifolium, Hymenaea courbaril var. stilbocarpa, Anadenanthera colubrina and Terminalia argentea while Guapira opposita, Guettarda viburnoides, Aspidosperma subincanum, Copaifera langsdorffii and Faramea nitida showed to be preferential in at least two gallery forest of the other gropup that included one gallery forest in Alto Paraiso de Goias (Almecegas gallery forest), one in Vila Propicio (Fidalgo2 gallery forest). Tapirira guianensis, Cheiloclinium cognatum and Protium heptaphylum were considered indifferent species that occurred in both groups. The number of exclusive species was high. This indicates the high heterogeneity of the gallery forest vegetation. The area of the National Park is not enough to protect their biodiversity in Veadeiros plateaux. The creation of a network of conservation units would be ideal to protect the gallery forest ecosystems in Central Brazil.
