Several authors have described the structural abnormalities in chromosomes of diploid banana cultivars. The parthenocarpic clones are often heterozygous for one or several traslocations or inversions. These structural rearrajements affect clone fertility. Knowledge of the diploid cytogenetic estructure is therefore essential for a breeding programme. Observations on 3 wild Musa acuminata individuals and 10 parthenocarpic diploid cultivars are reported. They aim to determine the nature of structural rearrangement (translocation or inversion) and level of structural heterozygosity in the diploid parents used in the CIRAD-IRFA banana breeding programme. All diploid cultivars showed a certain degree of structural heterozygosity but is was not strictly related to fertility. Sterility in diploid clones does not necessarily result from structural heterozygosity and can also be induced by genes. |
