An appraisal of the banana industry in the Philippines revealed that banana production plays an important role in the country'e economy. Banana is considered the premier fruit crops in the Philippines contributing 2,3% of the export revenue. Cognizant of its importance in the economic recovery efforts, banana research and development programs were attuned to the needs of the target clientele.This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of banana researches involving the past and current activities as well as research and development gaps. Also discussed are the National Research and Development thrusts and programs on banana and the role of the Philippines Development (PCARRD) in the planning, coordination, and implementation of the said program. |
