Conservation and characterization of cassava (manihot esculenta Crantz) germplasm is essential, because cassava is a staple food for millions of people, especially among farmers with limited resources in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The largest cassava germplasm collections are maintained in the field at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT, Cali, Colombia). The collections are also maintained in vitro, as micropropagated plantlets under slow-growth conditions. The base collection, with approximately 5500 accessions, conntains germplasm from 23 cassava-growing countries. A subset of the main collection, the core collection, was assembled to represent, in a smaller number of acccessions, the genetic variability present in the base collection. |
