Sustained yield forest management based on natural regeneration, with or without enrichment planting, is expected to become more common in the Brazilian Amazon, in part as a result of a new law and its regulation which were approved in 1986. Research linked to the management of Amazonian forests has been hampered by insufficient financial support, understaffed research teams, and untimely delays affecting the flow of financial resources required for field work. Nonetheless, much more research is beig carried out than is generally appreciated outside the country, because most research has been reported in Portuguese in publications of rather limited distribution. A short account is provided of continuing studies on natural regeneration at several sites andresearch stations in the Brazilian Amazon, including research ar Curua-Una Forestry Research Station (where silvicultural research applied to natural forests started in 1958), Palhao Forest Reserve, Tapajos National Forest, Belterra, Jari, and Manaus. |
