Clitoria ternatea is a trailing perennial legume of Old World origin but now widely distributed throughout the humid, lowland tropics, occurring naturally and spontaneously. It has been widely tested as a forage and cover crop but never widely accepted for these purposes. Hard seed coats require scarification for germination. Seedlings grow vigorously and cover the ground in 4 to 6 weeks. Established plants are fairly competitive with weeds but less so than some other legumes. The legume is readily accepted by cattle but the trailing stems may be severely damaged by excessive trampling. It grows best in combination with bunch-type grasses and may comprise 25 to 30% of the sward during the first year but usually drops to 5% or less afterwards. Dry forageyields are lighly variable and reports range from about 3 to 16 t/ha annually. |
