Recent advances in recombinant DNA technology have introduced the possibility of engineering baculovirus insecticides to enhance their pathogenicity by the incorporation of foreign genes. Before wide-scale release of such genetically manipulated micro-organisms thorough risk assessment studies must be undertaken. Risk assessment questions are discussed, underlining the need to base these analyses on a thorough knowledge of the ecology of the wild-type virus and with particular emphasis on four key areas of baculovirus biology - persistence, dipsersal, host range and recombination with other viruses. |
