Abstract : Three field trials were carried out in south-eastern Queensland in 1974-77 to compare spray and soil applications of 13 insecticides for the reduction of damage to the flower spikes of gladiolus by Thrips simplex (Morison) (Taeniothrips simplex). The most effective treatments were weekly sprays of 0.11% methamidophos or 0.06% omethoate, and soil applications, below the corm at planting, of aldicarb, disulfoton or phorate at 6.9 kg/ha.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In 3 field trials, weekly sprays from September/November to January of 0.11% methamidophos or 0.06% omethoate, or soil applications of aldicarb, disulfoton or phorate below the corm at planting, each at 6.9 kg/ha, increased the percentage of marketable flowering spikes to 83.1-97.4, 96.0-97.6, 85.1, 83.9 and 83.7, respectively, compared with 0.0-26.4 for untreated control plants. |
