This review is divided into four parts. In the first part data are presented which show the influence of root temperature on some aspects of plant growth and development, namely dry weight gain, plant height, root extent and form, leaf expansion, leaf form, flowering and fruiting. The second part is a similar presentation of data illustrating the influence of root temperature on the processes of photosynthesis, respiration, water absorption and transpiration. This is followed in part 3 by an examination of naturally occurring soil temperatures, which leads to a consideration of the effects of a change in root temperature relative to the influence of constant root temperatures. The final part is an examination of the practical steps that can be taken to control root temperature during crop production. |
