Fungicide toxicity has been a frequent topic of study, but the metabolic transformation and environmental fate of these compounds are still poorly understood. Studies on carbendazim (MBC) biodegradation in soils have been carried out to better assess the environmental impacts of fungicides. Soils samples were drawn from three agricultural areas receiving frequent pesticide application, and supplemented with MBC (50 ug/g). After an incubation period of 30 days at room temperature, 12 actinomycete strains were isolated from the samples. The isolates were transferred to liquid mineral medium supplemented with MBC in order to evaluate the capacity of each strain to degrade the fungicide. All strains were partially inhibited in the presence of the fungicide, and an adaptation period (lag phase) occurred in all cultures. The strains AB2, AB32 and AB30 grew faster than the remaining strains indicating some potential to degrade the fungicide. |
