This experiment was carried out at Chia-yi Agricultural Experiment Station, Chia-yi, Taiwan, Republic of China, since 1969 thru. 1973. Artificial pollination was employed to test the effect to the fertilization in the purple passion furits as will as the yellow passion fruits by selfing and crossing. In this experiment, it was found that fertilization percentages among selfing, crossing, and in nature in the purple passion fruits showed no significient differences. All of the fertilization percentages of the plants tested were about 80%. This proved that the purple passion fruits tested are selffertile. Honey bbees were found to play important role in the pollination. Results obtained by artificial self-pollination in the yellow passion fruits showed that the yellow passion fruits were mostly self-sterile. Fertilization percentages between two plants by artifical crossing varied with the parents tested. This might attribute to the different degrees of cross-incompatibility. Among the yellow passion fruits tested, some plant used as mother parent crossed by some other plant as father parent, coul produce abundance of fruits, but, when the parent crossed reciprocally, the fruit setting was occassionally poor. Whther it was induced by the different incompatibility groups designated by Dr. R. J. Knight, Jr. and Dr. H. F. Winters (1963), can not be determined. Honey bees were found in this experiment to be little effective to the pollination of the yellow passion fruits tested. |
