The ideal technique for monitoring bulk density, water content and other physical parameters in soil should be nondestructive, sensitive, rapid and able to resolve small differences in the measured parameters over distances of a few millimeters. However, currently available methods such as gravimetry, gamma-ray absorption-scattering, neutron-probe techniques and others do not take into account soil inhomogeneities and do not evaluate tri-dimensional profiles of bulk density, water content and soil water movement. The technique of computer-assisted tomography (CAT) has been successfully used as a new method for physical studies of soil water. Using a third generation CAT we performed several scans and tomographies of soil samples. We demonstrated the appropriateness of CAT to dynamic (real-time) studies of water motion in soil including measuring mater velocities as high as 1.6 mm/s. Information on heterogeneities of bulk density, water content and related 3-D information as well as simultaneous spatial and time distributions was obtained using the appropriate CAT techniques. Some semi-quantitative images of soil compaction, simulation of drip irrigation and seed germination, growth, and water uptake by roots in a column of soil was also performed. Two limitations of the CAT technique are the complexity and high cost of the medical CAT scanners. It was possible to design, build, and use in our laboratory an inexpensive CAT miniscanner dedicated to soil science research. |
