A total of 60 male and 40 female pigs were examined at necropsy for the occurrence of muscular dystrophy. Myodystrophic lesions were found in a mild or severe form in 62.5% of the male and 37.5% of the femal pigs. The relationship of these cases with various other primary diseases was determined. A certain increase of muscular dystrophy was observed in diseases which include circulatory disturbances and physical strain. There was no correlation between muscular lesions and body weight. A pathogenetic sequence of the gradual development of the lesions is described. Portions of musculature appearing white macroscopically always showed at least slight degeneration of muscle fibers. It was found that the squeezing method is a useful aid for the examination of the musculature of those pigs which at necropsy are found suspicious for myopathy. |
