Concentration and composition of non-structural carbhydrates and the activities of related hydrolytic enzymes were determined in tuberous rooots of Cochlospermum regium, a species from the Brazilian cerrado. Tuberous roots of different sizes from plants in vegetative stage of unknown age and from 1-2-years-old plants in different phenological stages were used. Starch was found to be the major carbohydrate of these organs except for the youngest and smallest roots in which free sugars predominated. The presence of amylases and starch phosphorylase in the latter as well as the seasonal fluctuations of these enzymes and of acid invertase suggest that starch, acumulated during the vegetative stages, is utilized during the sprouting of the young plants. In the larger roots the low molecular weight sugars seem to be preferentially used for this process. These variations are discussed in terms of water or temperature stresses which occur during the dry winter season characteristic of this tropical environment. |
