The effect of various soil fumigants on soil microsclerotial populations of Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassie)Goid and on subsequent disease expression on muskmelon were tested in spring trials in 1982 and 1983.In 1982 some fumigant treatments significantly decreased soil inoculumbut not the percentage of muskmelon plants developing M.phaseolina-induced vine decline. Although several treatments reduced soil inoculum to undetectable levels in 1983, considerable disease development was observed, indicating a low inoculum-infection threshold. Soil solarization was evaluated for control of M.phaseolina in 1983. Solarization,although markedly increasing soil temperature, did not reduce soil inoculum at any depth. |
