Asian soybean rust, reported in 2001 in South America, spread quickly to the main Brazilean producing areas causing great yield losses in the following seasons. The outbreaks occured mainly due to the lack of knowledge and information about diagnosis and control measures. Aiming to reduce losses, the Ministry of Agriculture in 2004 created the "anti-rust consortium", the main objective of which was to standardize the exsisting information, and to spread this through out the entire soybean chain. The consotium is composed of 60 experts, responsible for training farmers and extension agents. Besides training, the consortium monitors rust infection foci through 58 accredited laboritories in 16 Brazilean states, forming a chain to address rust diagnosis and identification across the country. The information from the laboratories is published in an alert system (www.cnpso.embrapa.br/alerta). Trap plots have been used to help scouting the disease foci and farmers have been trained to eliminate voluteer plants and avoid growing soybeans during winter, to reduce the inoculum during intercrops. The fungicides registered for rust control have been evaluated in different producing regions through a network of fungicide trials. Weather stations were installed in strategic locations to study favorable conditions for the occurrence of epidemics and to validate forcasting models. |
