This work, presents a comparative study between two populations of Magonia pubescens in relation to their seed germination physiology. The effects of constant and alternating temperatures were studied, and it was shown that seeds germinate between 10 to 40C. The behaviour of the two populations was very similar both in constant and alternating temperatures. In presoaked intact seeds only exposures for 72 hours at 45 C inhibited germination. With decoated seeds exposures for 72 hours at 45C inhibited germination if the seeds had been imbibed for 6 hours. The carbohdrate, protein and free sugars content was very similar in the gel formed by the seeds of both populations. After hydrolysis xylose, glucose, galacturonic and glucuronic acids were detected. During..germination there was no change in the level of proteins and carbohydrates in the gel. The fungistatic property of the gel was maintained during the period of germination. |
