Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances which have been found in water bodies and wastewater, and are capable to interfere at the endocrine system of humans and animals, causing many adverse effects to health. Among these substances are the estrogen hormone ethinylestradiol (EE2), the progestin levonorgestrel (LNG) and the bisphenol A (BPA), substance used in the production of plastics, which in concentrations of nanogramas per liter could affect the reproduction and the sexual characteristics of aquatics animals. Constructed wetlands are natural wastewater treatment systems with low implantation and maintenance costs, suitable for installation in rural and isolated communities, which have been shown capable of removing endocrine disrupters from contaminated wastewater. In this context, the present project aimed to evaluate the retention efficiency of these three substances by four bench scale constructed wetlands - three containing gravel as support matrix, one cultivated with Cyperus isocladus (WL1), other with Eichhornia crassipes (WL3), and one without macrophyte (WL2). The fourth unit contained gravel and bamboo charcoal as support matrix, also cultivated with Cyperus isocladus (WLC). The results showed that the most efficient wetland for retention of EE2 and BPA was WLC, and for retention of LNG were WL1 and WL3 (without bamboo charcoal).) |
