The ability to move and exchange cassava germoplasm directly affects its utilization. safe transfer within and between countries minimizing the risk of transferring pests is required. This paper includes discussion of the quarantine aspects of cassava germplasm and the type of infrastructure and training needed to facilitate international movement.Technical guidelines for the safe movement of cassava guidelines were developed in Columbia in 1990 by FAO/IBPGR. Of the four methods of shipping germplasm as outlined in the technical guidelines, the method favoured for transfer of large quantities of germplasm is via sexual seed. This is favoured due to the lack of confirmed transmitted viruses. Specific clone transfer is shipped by means of in vitro plantlets. Countries unable to handle in vitro material require the material to be sent in the form of cuttings for pathogen-tested in vitro cultures. In all cases of receiving germplasm the risk of introduction of pests isminimized by careful containment, inspection and monitoring of all material. |
