Bienial inventories of Florida citrus show that the most acreage was in 1970, but the most trees were reported in 1992, in spite of recent freezes. About 31% of the 1992 inventory are young (nonbearing). Oranges accounted for 79.1%, grapefuit 14.3%, and all others accounted for 6.3% of the trees. About 45% of the 73 million orange trees are the 'Valencia' or late type and 39% are early types. More colored (pigmented) than white grapefruit trees are planted. Recent freezes reduced the numbers of "specialty" fruit, except limes were unchanged. The USDA has developed 14 new cultivars, 7 since 1979 and 6 since 1987 'Flame' and 'Ambersweet' are planted to the greatest extent, followed by 'Sunburst'. |
