Sheep raising is an option for small and medium farmers of Southeast Region of Brazil and, although its image has always been linked to the wool production, this activity is suffering an marked change, due low wool prices, and increased market demand for lamb meat. In the São Paulo State - Brazil, over the last years, an increase in the number of sheep has been verified, as well as an increase in the number of properties involved in this activity. The market for lamb meat is increasing due the high retail prices. The demand is specific for good quality carcasses, with average weight of 12 to 13 kg, from young lambs, averaging 120-150 days of age. In the Southeast Region of Brazil, it is usual to keep common ewes, without defined breed, or hair sheep, especially the Santa Inês breed, on pastures. They are more proliferous, have lower weight and so demand less feed. They can be sired with rams of improved meat breeds like Suffolk, Ile de France or Poll Dorset to produce fast growing crossed lambs with better carcass traits. Ewes and suckling lambs can be kept on pasture and lambs confined from weaning to slaughter. The slaughter weight between 28 and 30 kg, can be reached up to 120 days of age. For this, the birth weight must be around the 3.5 kg, the weaning time between 45 - 60 days of age, and the lamb weight between 13 to16 kg. The expected daily live weight gain is 230 and 220 g, respectively, for weaning and postweaning stages. To get good results in meat sheep farming a large number of lambs, produced and available throughout the year, are needed. This means, high number of born and weaned lambs (low mortality, high fertility and high maternal ability), a low production cost and, mainly, no-seasonal reproductive ewes. The reproductive system traditionally used by the wool sheep farmer (one lambing per year, in spring time) leads to seasonal meat production that is not good for sales. Intensified mating (8 month mating-interval) should be used to improve distribution and production of lamb meat.
