Conteúdo:  Because soybean yields of 4 to 5 tons./ha-1 require abundant quantities of water and nitrogen, experiments were conducted in SW France on soils (fine, mixed, mesic Udic Haplustalfs) of varying depths, with water and mineral N reserves related to depth. Treatments included irrigations as well as N-fertilizing irrigations in which 3 doses of 50 kg.ha-1 N, as urea, were delivered in the irrigation water at various stages in reproductive development. Genotypes (maturity groups I to III) were of indeterminate, semi-dwarf determinate, or semi-determinate growth habit. For all growth habit types, yields increased in a similar manner with increases in available water due to irrigation or increasing soil depth. Response to N application depended on growth habit as well as soil depth and timing of N application. In general, with high inputs of water and N, yields were more stable for determinates, due to their superior lodging resistance. The largest yield responses to N (+0.5 to 1 ton.ha-1) occurred in shallow soil with N applied between R1 and R4. Earlier N application decreased nodulation, had little effect on fructification, and resulted in excessive vegetative growth of indeterminates. Likewise, in deep soils where N was not limiting, N application resulted in extensive lodging, increased diseases, and yield reductions especially in indeterminates. These results suggest that N application during reproductive growth may enhance yield, but they also demonstrate that the amount, tim... Mostrar Tudo
