Six-year-old bearing `Ogawa III' guava (Psidium guajava L.) trees grown in a commercial orchard in Sao Francisco do Itabapoana city, north of Rio de Janeiro State, were used in this study. Five trees chosen randomly were used to determine the correlation between leaf area (LA) and leaf dry weight (LDW). Leaves were sampled from two bearing shoots per tree, at chest height, selected randomly in the north and south sides of the tree, and the LA and LDW were then determined. Highly significant correlation between LA and LDW (LA = 96.07 LDW; R2 = 0.999) was found by regession analysis. The model was validated by using three shoots from three trees in the adjacent area of that used for the model.There was no significant difference in regression coefficients betweenthe former and later sampplings. At pppruning time, total leaf weight of six trees was determined by wieghing the total number of leaves atttached in the pruned shoots of each tree. At weighing time, leaf moisture content of each tree was determined and a known sample was dried in a forced air oven (90 graus C for 24 hours) to determine the LDW. The average total LA of six-year-old guava trrees at pruning time was 86.8 m2 with variation of mais ou menos 10% according to total LDW. |
