Blight is a seriouse disease of citrus in Brazil and Florida. The disease has been in Florida for over 100 years and been the subject of numerous research efforts. Reperted failures over the years to transmit or propagate the disease by budding led to conclusion that it was non-parasitic. This conclusion continues to be supported by some researchers today in spite of repeated demonstration in the 1980s that the disease is readily transmitted by root grafting, which indicates it is caused by a systemic pathogen. Current reaserch designed to identify and characterize this recalcitrant pathogen has been aided by significant improvements in methods for distinguishing trees with blight from thosewith other declines, such as tristeza, root rot, drought stress, etc. These include the observations that trees with blight have (i) elevated levels of Zn in the wood, (ii) amorphous plugs in the xylem that restrict the flow of water, and (iii) specific proteins that appear to be present only in trees with blight. |
