Breeding of horticulture crops is a relative new activity in Brazil; Most of the cultivars grown in Brazil are imported and do not have the right adaptation to the environmental conditions of the country and lack often resistance against pathogens, which might be not a problem in the country where the cultivar las been selected, but is a maior constraint in Brazil. At the National Horticulture Research Centre five differnet research programmes have been set up on breeding for disease resistance: 1 Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) and Mosaic Virus (PUY) resistance in potato. 2)Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) resistance in sweet pepper. 3) TSWV resistance in tomato. 4) Powdery mildew resistance in peas. 5) Powdery mildew resistance in cucumber. The project has been terminated earlier than was expected for which reason not all experiments have been concluded. Moreover, the situation that both statisticians Dr. P.E.F. Rossi, Dr. Celia M.T. Cordeira and their assistant Mr. Edson left CNPH made termination of statistical analysis difficult. |
