During the summer and fall of 1972, three F2 populations were planted and the inheritance of the following characters were studied: flower color, growth habit, pod wall color, seedcoat color, and seed holding. Parents involved in the crosses were forrest as female crossed with PI 88788, PI 90763, and PI 227687. The results of the study confirm those reported in the literature. All factors can be explained by single gene hypothesis with a 3:1 segregation ratio. Purple flower is dominant over white flowers, indeterminate growth habit dominant over determinate, brown pod wall dominant over tan pod wall, yellow seedcoat (with black hila) dominant over black seedcoat, and in relation to seed holding, schattering was dominant over non-shattering in two crosses and in the other, shattering was recessive to non-shattering. Additional data furnished by Dr. Edgar E. Hartwig is presented by which he postulated a two major gene hypothesis for seed holding. |
