The present work mainly deals with studies of the residues of heavy metals (Pb and Cd) in sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from the water system of the Saar river, an affluent of the Moselle (left tributary of the Rhine). The 13 sites from which sticklebacks were taken are described in the text and shown in a map. 11 sites are represented in black and white. 3 sites are isolated waters which are not connected with the Saar river system. The residue analyses have been carried out by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The highest lead concentrations were found to occur at Saarholzbach (6,76 mg/kg dry weight) and at Saarburg (6,46 mg/kg), whereas the highest Cadmium values were measured at Remelfing, France (0,44 mg/kg) and in a pool in a quarry near Kerprich-Hemmersdorf (0,36 mg/kg). The average concentration of Pb in G. aculeatus taken directly from the Saar river amounted to 4,48 mg/kg (1,00-6,76 mg/kg) as against 0,19 mg/kg (0,09-0,44 mg/kg) for Cd. The concentration levels of heavy metals in the sediments of the Saar and Blies rivers have been compared with the levels found in the stickleback specimens. Other factors such as the pH value, O2 content, temperature and clearness of the water as well as the biology of G. aculeatus have also been discussed. In particular, the part played by the predators of sticklebacks has been investigated. The above factors including the water quality (saprobity) in conjunction with the concentration levels of the heavy metals Pb and Cd served as a basis for discussing...
