At the end of the XIX century, the horn fly, Haematobia irritans irritans was introduced in the American continent (USA) from Europe (Riley, 1889). The presence of this fly in South America was first recorded in Venezuela (Vogelsang and De Armas, 1940) and during the second half of 1970's it entered north of Brazil (Valerio and Guimaraes, 1983). After crossing the natural Amazon barrier, in 1984, the horn fly became widespread reaching Southern Brazil and neighboring countries such as Argentina (Luzuriaga et al., 1991) and Uruguay (Carballo and Martinez, 1992). |
