The calf-hood diseases are believed to be of greater significance in raising of buffaloes than cows. This may possibly be due to their genetic susceptibility to disease or due to other factors which need detailed investigation. The calf-hood diseases in buffalo-calves are Known to caese heavy financial losses. The losses occurring on account of mortality alone include loss of calf itself, limited scope for the selection of breeding animals, delay in rebuilding of herds and loss of lactation. A review of literature on calf mortality ( Vinattieri et al., 1945; Minnet, 1946; Priestley and Artioli, 1946; Sastry, 1955; Ramakrishnan, 1955; Das and Singh, 1955; Shanmugalingam, 1956; Dhanda and Khera, 1957; Bandarnayake, 1962; Sahin et al., 1967; Dwivedi, 1968; Sharma et al., 1975 ) reveals considerable variation in the mortality figures. This paper presents the buffalo calf mortality in a buffalo herd. |
