Abstract : Sheep naturally infected with gastro-intestinal nematodes were treated, in groups of 5, with thiophanate (50 mg/kg body-weight), fenbendazole (5 mg/kg), morantel tartrate (10 mg/kg) or P-toluoyl chloride phenylhydrazone (50 mg/kg) or were left untreated. All 4 drugs eliminated Strongyloides eggs from the faeces and no worms were found in the intestine at slaughter. Thiophanate and morantel tartrate were fully effective, and the other 2 drugs only slightly less effective, against strongyles (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia). No drug was active against Trichurus ovis. |
