The herbage intake of grazing animals will be influenced by the digestibility and the cell wall content of the material consumed, but the extent to which these attributes influence intake will depended on the nutrient requirement of the animal and the grazing managements imposed. There is evidence, especially from indoor trials, to indicate that important intake differences may exist between both species and varieties. However, because of the high digestibility of the diet selected by grazing animals, the differences measured in the field may be somewhat smaller than those demonstrated indoors. Further research is needed to determine whether the spatial distribution of temperate grasses is an important factor controlling intake, and whether the structural components of forage species and varietes can be used as a basis for selection to give plants that are eaten in greater quantities. |
