An experiment was conducted on 12 maize hybrids to study the processes involved in screening for P efficiency in nutrient solutions. Four P concentrations (0.3, 0.9, 2.7 and 5.4 mg/litre) were applied to the nutrient solution 20 days after transplanting. In related experiments, the effect of P stress on the morphological and physiological root characteristics were studied. The seed P level and the total dry matter and shoot dry matter were significantly and positively correlated at 0.3, 0.9 and 2.7 mg P/litre. The best treatment to evaluate changes in total root length under P stress was that of 6 days of P omission which significantly increased the root length of 3 of the P efficient hybrids. The omission of P in nutrient solution significantly increased the maximum rate of P absorption of 6 hybrids after 3 days of omission and in 5 genotypes after 6 days of omission. |
