With ahightened awareness that economic growth per se will not solve the poverty pro-
blem in LDC's, there has emerged a growing interest in quantitative studies of poverty to help serve a basis for the design of directly redistributive policy interventions. With this in mind, the paper is organized in four sections. The first section introduces the problem to be treated. The second delas with the specification of "poverty levels", or the income below which a family is considered to be poor, both for the rural and urban sectors. This section concludes with a comparison of the rural and urban poverty lines with the range of minimum wages in Brazil. |
