Drawing up a "core collection" of a given crop needs a selection of a representative sample including both cultivated and wild species. The realisation of this simple idea is complex and the strategy depends on the characteristics of the crop in question. Coffee could be a good model to promote and test a sampling strategy whych could be extended to other perennial plants which have recalcitrant seeds. The main reason for this choice are: the large amount of collected diversity, the availability of genetic resourances in field, the amount of characterization data and the knowledge of species relationships. In the first part our presentation, we will describe the guidelines used for defining the deversity groups in the subgenus Coffea. In the second part we wi ll present a statistical method, using quantitative data, which allows to maximisation of the within-group variability. The method is applied to a particular diversity group, C. liberica from the Central Africa ("congolian" group). |
